Rereading A Court of Thorns and Roses: Seeing the Story With New Eyes

If you're anything like me, you've probably found yourself rereading A Court of Thorns and Roses lately. Maybe it's because you miss Prythian, maybe you're preparing for a reread before continuing the series, or maybe you just wanted an excuse to fall back into a world you already know you love.

Whatever the reason, I'm currently a little over halfway finished with ACOMAF reread, and I'm having so much fun with it. The biggest surprise?

I forgot SO much.

And I don't mean little details here and there. I'm talking about entire conversations, little moments, characters, clues, and pieces of information that I somehow completely erased from my brain.

It's almost like getting to experience the book for the first time again but not exactly.

Because this time, I know things. And that changes everything.

It's So Different When You Know What's Coming

One of my favorite parts of rereading a series is realizing just how differently certain scenes hit when you already know what happens later. The first time around, you're reading the story as it's presented to you. You're meeting the characters, learning the world, trying to figure out who you can trust, and taking everything at face value. But on a reread? You're suspicious.

You're noticing things you completely overlooked before. A line that seemed insignificant the first time suddenly feels like a giant neon sign.

A character's behavior makes more sense.

A conversation has an entirely different meaning.

And sometimes I'm sitting there thinking, HOW DID I NOT NOTICE THAT?!

It's honestly one of the best parts of rereading ACOTAR.

The Things I Forgot Are Almost as Fun as the Things I Remembered

I went into this reread expecting to remember most of the major plot points which I do.

But the little details? Apparently my brain decided those were optional. There have been so many moments where I've thought, Wait…this happened?! And I LOVE it.

There's something oddly comforting about rediscovering a book you already know. I don't have the same anxiety about what is going to happen next because I already know where the story eventually takes me. Instead, I can slow down and actually appreciate the journey. I'm noticing the smaller moments. The conversations, relationships. The little pieces of worldbuilding. The things that seemed like background info the first time around.

And because I know more about the overall story now, those details feel so much more important.

Knowing the Future Changes How You See the Past

I think that's what has surprised me most about this reread. It's not just that I remember what happens. It's that knowing what happens changes how I interpret what I'm reading now.

Characters I once viewed one way feel completely different and scenes that once felt like simple moments now feel loaded. And I'm constantly catching myself thinking about how a particular event connects to something that happens much later in the series. It's almost like rereading with a secret map.

The first time, you're discovering the world. The second time, you're recognizing the roads. And suddenly, all those little breadcrumbs are much easier to see.

I'm Having a Completely Different Reading Experience

I'm still only on the second book so I know there is a lot of the story left for me to revisit. And I don't want to rush it. I'm having way too much fun noticing everything I forgot and looking at familiar scenes through a completely different lens.

There's also something really special about rereading a book that has stayed with you for years. You aren't the exact same reader you were the first time you picked it up.

You've read more books. You've experienced more stories. You know more about the characters and the world. Maybe your opinions have changed. Maybe the things that mattered to you the first time aren't the things you notice now.

And ACOTAR is giving me so many of those moments.
